DISAPPOINTING WATER PRESSURE? HOW TO GIVE THE SYSTEM A BOOST
In many parts of the UK, householders are having to put up with low water pressure, with the existing water supply struggling to cope with increased demand from ensuites and multiple showers. Duncan Lewis from Dutypoint explains how installers can best come to their customers` aid. Low water pressure has been a frustration in a number of households for many years and the problem does not seem to be going away. The symptoms we hear reported are typically around poor flow rates and fluctuating water pressure, as well as not being able to use more than two outlets effectively at the same time. Combi boilers can also struggle to fire up on demand. Other challenges can include water supply pipes not being sized correctly, particularly in older properties where pipes are partially blocked, therefore further reducing the throughput of water. Simply looking at these issues and installing an individual solution, such as a shower pump and accumulator vessel, may not be sufficient to resolve the problem – especially in larger properties or multiple dwellings, where a more powerful system is required to boost the whole system rather than individual outlets. Under pressure Unfortunately, low water pressure is not an uncommon problem in the UK, with water companies – themselves under financial obligations to reduce leakage rates – having to reduce pressure in their water systems which in turn exacerbates the situation for the domestic user and beyond. Under the Ofwat Regulation: Low Pressure (GSS Regulation 10) stipulates that [the company must maintain a minimum pressure in the communication pipe of seven metres static head (0.7 bar)" at the boundary of the property. Providing the water company is supplying more than this pressure, there is no legal obligation for them to do anything to increase the supply pressure to residential properties. Regrettably, 0.7 bar is not sufficient to efficiently run most combi boilers which require at least 1.3 bar to work effectively and, with fluctuating demand on the water supply pipe, this serves to intensify the problem. Consumers usually find the issue at certain times of the day when the demand is high – typically early morning or around dinner time – when you need good pressure to work the washing machine, two showers and make a cup of tea. Over the last decade or so, we have seen trends in housing developments and home improvements change, meaning there has been a huge uplift in additional bathrooms, shower rooms and ensuites. However, very often these are added without careful consideration of how the existing water supply will cope. Break tanks The other challenge is that you cannot simply connect a pump straight into the mains water when the flow rate needed is above 12 L/min (except on very rare occasions, and with special permission from the water undertaker). Typically, you will need a pressure booster pump set that is separated from the water mains by a break tank. Break tanks have an air break between where the water comes in and where the level stops. This prevents water from flowing back into the mains and potentially contaminating down the line. The break tank is used as a reservoir of water that the pump draws from to provide whatever flow rate is required to satisfy the system`s requirements. Which booster? To get the best product it is necessary to assess the following points which will assist in deciding which booster set is needed: • Decide the pressure needed to come out of the shower or tap, there are standard and high flow shower heads, a nice powerful shower needs around 2 bar. • Consider the height of the building, from where the pump is located to the highest shower. • Sum up all the appliances in the house and calculate the draw-off flow-rates; published guidance can be found in BS EN 806 (Part 3) with a complimentary guide BS8558. • Calculate the friction losses there might be the pipes based upon their diameter and peak flow-rate. Best solution Today, there is certainly a need for a solution that works to combat the varying demands of a modern house, but avoiding the costly installation of a new larger mains supply, redecorating, overcoming regulated shower/tap usage and reduction in noise levels during operation. With the above information it is possible to select the correct pump set and associated tank. There is a legal requirement to comply with The Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations 1999 in England & Wales, 2009 Northern Ireland and 2014 Byelaws Scotland. These regulations cover the design, installation, operation and maintenance of water fittings, systems and appliances. The water undertaker retains absolute discretion in assessing whether a product complies with the regulations, although the most widely accepted method of demonstrating compliance is an approval certificate from an accredited laboratory, such as WRAS or Kiwa UK (KUKreg4). This proves that the product has passed a set of stringent tests to ensure that it is suitable and safe to convey wholesome (potable) water. It is important to check the details of any certificate provided to ensure that the approval covers the product as a whole rather than separate components and that the specific model to be installed is covered. Meeting demand With many types of design on the market ranging from a single pump with pressure switch control, pump and accumulator through to multiple pumps and variable speed controls, all offer the consumer a different solution. One market leading solution is an integrated pump and tank, such as a Dutypoint ScubaTANK which has been designed to have pump/s installed in a reservoir of stored water. The tank is sized to cope with maximum demand and is able to supply instant pressure and automatically vary its output dependent upon the usage of water within the building. It`s one solution that is helping to provide a boost for a growing number of properties.

HAVE-A-GO CONSUMERS TACKLE PLUMBING JOBS AT HOME
A new survey from the Water Regulation Advisory Scheme (WRAS) shows that almost a fifth of consumers regularly attempt to fix plumbing problems in the home themselves. A third of respondents also admit to having had to call in a plumber to fix a DIY disaster. WRAS is urging people to think carefully about which plumbing tasks they are competent to do themselves and which ones should be left to a professional qualified plumber, saying that even a simple task like fitting a washing machine needs some knowledge about the water fittings regulations. For example a common mistake when fitting a washing machine would be to use a non-compliant hose with no backflow protection. Survey results When asked where they would source advice or information on repairing plumbing problems, 6% say they never seek advice. Others seek guidance from YouTube (49%), Google (44%), and friends and family (38%) before seeking professional advice and calling on a plumber (31%). The research shows that people are willing to try their hands at simpler plumbing tasks, such as bleeding a radiator (58%), fixing a leaky tap (41%), installing a washing machine or dishwasher (36%). The top plumbing task Brits are most likely to fix themselves are: • Bleed a radiator (58%) • Check a stop tap is working (42%) • Fix a leaky tap (41%) • Install a washing machine or dishwasher and connect a hose for the water supply (36%) • Replace a tap (24%) However, nearly one in 10 would tackle more complex tasks such as installing a toilet. Some would even attempt to repair a boiler (4%), fit a new boiler (3%) or try replacing an underground service pipe (4%). Not all UK adults are confident to tackle plumbing tasks however, as 29% would never attempt to fix plumbing problems at home and 54% said that it would be rare for them to attempt a plumbing repair. Surprisingly 45-54 year olds were more likely to ask friends and family, with 47% turning to their nearest and dearest for help, compared to 29% of 18 – 24 year olds. Julie Spinks, managing director of WRAS, says: [People often turn to DIY to save money and get a sense of satisfaction, however sometimes when it comes to plumbing there are some jobs that are best managed by an approved plumber. [Plumbing within the house can be challenging, so it is interesting to see that so many Brits are willing to have a go with the help of Google and YouTube. WRAS-APPROVED THREAD LOCKER AND SEALANT IS HAZARD LABEL FREE
LOCTITE 5400 thread sealant is part of Henkel`s Health and Safety range. This general-purpose metal pipe sealant is hazard-label free, WRAS-approved for use with potable water up to 85°C and suitable for when the joint needs to be sealed and locked against vibrational self-loosening. This single component product relies on the absence of air and contact with metal to make it cure. When applied to a taper parallel thread and wrenched tight, the adhesive provides an instant seal. So, if needed, the system can be pressurised straight away. It also protects the mated threaded areas against corrosion and the seal can be released at any time using compliant practices. Application is simple and quick. Having ensured all surfaces are clean, apply a 360°bead of LOCTITE 5400 to the leading threads of the male fitting, leaving the first thread free and thoroughly filling all voids. For bigger threads and voids, apply a bead of product to the female threads also. Assembly and wrench tight, job done. LOCTITE 5400 covers the lion`s share of applications and provides excellent chemical and thermal resistance. In addition to sealing threaded fittings, LOCTITE 5400 is ideal for sealing olives.

SMARTPRESS PIPING SYSTEM USED ON BERKELEY GROUP PROJECT
Viega`s Smartpress range has been installed at the Royal Warwick Square apartment complex, a new build development from the prestigious residential developer Berkeley St. Edward, part of the Berkeley Group. The multilayer composite pipework was selected for its speed and simplicity during installation. Furthermore, its flexibility helped to reduce the number of joints required on the project by as much as 80% – minimising the risk of leaks. Positioned in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Royal Warwick Square offers 375 one, two, and three-bedroom luxury apartments and penthouses. Viega`s Smartpress system in various sizes from 16 to 40mm was used throughout the development on the potable, boosted cold and heating system pipework. After discussions with Chris Boakes, specification sales manager at Viega, the team at Berkeley St. Edward selected Viega`s Smartpress as the pipe system could offer excellent leak prevention and it would also help to reduce the total number of joints required. The simplicity of the cold applied Viega`s Smartpress multilayer piping system means it does not require the use of an O-ring, taking away the need for complex calibration and cutting installation time by as much as 30%. It also provides installation flexibility by allowing easy shaping of the pipe for corners and around wall details on site. This in turn reduces the number of fittings required, compared to a metal system. The stainless-steel fittings also feature Viega`s renowned SC-Contur technology, which is designed to clearly indicate any unpressed connections during a leak-test. Viega and the installer, Vital Energi, liaised closely to ensure the distribution of products, installation and quality checks were carried out as Viega recommends. In addition, the Viega team also provided onsite training for Vital Energi`s installation team. Given the luxury specification of the apartments, understandably, reducing the risk of any leaks that could cause damage to the building was crucial. Viega`s Smartpress system was the ideal solution because it is an advanced multilayer, flexible pipe that can bend around structures. By reducing the number of joints required, it significantly minimises the chance of any leaks occurring. Dean Walsh, project director at Vital Energi, comments: [Viega`s Smartpress system was straightforward to install. As we had not previously worked with Viega, they provided us with training to ensure we understood all the parameters of the system. We found that we were able to reduce the number of fittings as the pipework was easy to form into bends. It is a great product that we believe saved us money when compared against a copper press connection." Andrew Podmore, senior MEP manager at Berkeley St. Edward, concludes: [The installation has been successful so far, and we`ve been able to reduce the number of joints used by 80%. I`ll be looking to propose Viega`s systems on future projects." Royal Warwick Square is set to be completed in three phases, with the final installations to be completed in 2023.

SIMPLE SHOWER INSTALLATION SOLUTIONS
Shower installations can present challenges for even the most experienced of installers. Tom Rastall, head of product management at Bristan, takes us through the most common shower installation challenges and how to solve them. SHOWER REPORT PREDICTS MARKET RECOVERY
The latest Shower Market Trends Report from MTW Research reveals that while the impact of Covid-19 on the shower market will exceed £22 million in lost sales, strong demand will provide an £85 million sales boost by 2024. The 280 page report forecasts that shower market sales will return to pre-Covid levels in 2022. The analysis suggests that growth next year will be underpinned by pent up demand from 30-50 age group consumers, while demand is set to be further strengthened by the 50+ age group consumers following the UK`s vaccination programme. MTW`s director Mark Waddy comments: [There are healthy demand trends in the shower market in late 2020, prompting growth forecasts of almost £30 million for 2021. Demand was shifting slightly toward a more value-led proposition until mid 2020, though this trend has now reversed with a release of pent up demand and healthy value growth underpinning forecasts of more than 20% by 2024." Based on £500 million of sales data, the report identifies trends and shares for shower controls, screens, trays, enclosures and accessories markets separately, with the longer term impact of the pandemic perhaps not as severe as initially feared. However, the impact of Covid-19 will reverberate across the shower market for some time. For example, MTW forecast the domestic and commercial shower controls markets to be worth almost £10 million less by 2024 than was previously forecast. According to MTW, the shower mixing valve market will exceed pre-Covid sales by the end of 2022 with trade sources forecasting healthy volume and value growth in the medium term. Concealed valves and digital shower trends continue to support value growth, whilst volume demand is set to return rapidly for bar-mixers and exposed shower valves. Shower tray trends are also positive for 2021 with sales set to exceed pre-Covid sales quickly. Double digit growth is predicted over the next four years for the shower tray market, following a £5 million decline due to Covid-19. Sales of shower enclosures continue to grow in size – both physically and from a market value perspective, with the report identifying a number of key underlying trends set to boost demand in 2021 and beyond. Shower enclosure sales are set to exceed £100 million in the near term according to MTW, boosted by value and volume demand growth. Installer shortages and possible supply shortages due to Covid and Brexit may well increase prices in the near term. However, these trends may also reduce price sensitivity in the mid-higher value shower market to some extent, with the impact of these issues not forecast to significantly constrain market growth. While the challenges facing shower suppliers were compounded by the second national lockdown in November 2020, the report found that demand for installations and internet distribution continued to rise in 2020 for most shower products. The report analyses distribution channel shares in 2020, with internet retailers gaining most share due to the coronavirus pandemic. However, lower price sensitivity, rising volume demand and returning demand from older consumers in 2021 is prompting greater optimism from independent bathroom retailers. Despite ongoing challenges for the shower market, the opportunities and trends identified should provide a much welcome relief for the shower market in 2021 and beyond.

NO MESSING ABOUT WITH NEW FLUESNUG
The team behind PipeSnug – an innovative product designed to provide a smart and quick-to-apply finish around pipework – has launched a larger `FlueSnug` version designed to fit all 100mm boiler flues. Removing any need for pointing, FlueSnug can be installed in a matter of seconds and snuggly fits the 152mm core-drilled hole through which the boiler pipe and flue exits. It can be used both inside and outside the property and also acts as a barrier to drafts, damp, insects, and pests. FlueSnug also allows installers to quickly access the flue for any service or maintenance requirements, without the need to remove existing brickwork, mortar or sealant. It can then be quickly reinstalled, again saving time and cost. The new product is said to offer installers a cost-effective way to comply with proposed changes to the Building Regulations, which are set to mandate the need for pipe collars or grommets where pipe enters or exits a home.

CALL FOR UPDATE TO WATER REGULATIONS TRAINING
A new study from the Water Regulatory Advisory Scheme (WRAS) has found that 91% of approved plumbers believe it should be mandatory for plumbers to undertake water fittings regulations training. The research also showed that plumbers want their industry training to be updated to cover off broader spectrum of topics and include periodic refresher training and auditing. In terms of water fitting regulations, 60% of plumbers agree that more in-depth training on the regulations is needed on their courses. The study also found that 55% of plumbers agree that periodic refresher training would ensure plumbers apply the water fittings regulations correctly. Although plumbers have called for some updates to current training, almost four out of five (77%) believe that the current water fitting regulations programme encourages good practise and gives plumbers the knowledge to apply the regulations correctly. Support for continual professional development resources to be readily available was supported by half of the approved plumbers surveyed. Online resources, videos and quizzes were highlighted as examples of useful tools that could be used by skilled plumbers to ensure continued compliance with water regulations. In response to this, WRAS has launched a new online quiz for plumbers. The short questionnaire will test knowledge on the water fittings regulations and is the first in a series of themed quizzes. Only 40% of plumbers agreed that more auditing of plumbers` work would ensure plumbers apply the water fittings regulations correctly, further indicating how important the water fittings regulation training is. Julie Spinks, MD of WRAS, says: [We regularly reach out to our network of approved plumbers to get an update on the industry and it has been very interesting to hear their take on the current industry training. [It is encouraging that most believe the current water fittings regulations courses do ensure regulations can be applied correctly and these insights are really important for the ongoing development of industry training. [Our new online quiz is fun way to put plumbers` knowledge to the test but will also help them to understand where they might have any gaps or need refresher training."

HOW TO TACKLE WATER PRESSURE PROBLEMS AND REPLACE A FLOW VALVE
Triton Showers has produced a series of videos tackling some of the key questions received by its customer service team. Here, Paul Rowley, approvals and training manager at Triton, explains how to handle issues with water pressure and replace a faulty flow valve. Q. How can I avoid low water pressure affecting a shower installation? Common causes of inadequate water pressure include low mains water pressure and showers piped onto gravity systems or connected to combination boilers. Where lack of pressure is an issue, an orange mechanical indicator light may illuminate to highlight this. Step one: When the shower is switched on, the indicator should change and the orange light should go off. If this doesn`t happen, there may be a fault with the mains water supply. Step two: Remove the shower head and block the water flow from the hose with a thumb or finger on cold power setting. If this gradually gets the indicator to lift then it`s the low pressure that`s the issue, and the mains supply is most likely operating correctly. Step three: If the mechanical indicator is lifting then there is still a bit pressure there. However, it may not be enough to provide maximum flow to the shower. This could be due to having poor water pressure, or signpost that an inlying valve is only partially open. It may also suggest that you need to make sure the stop tap at the point of water coming into the property is fully open too, so there are no blockages or restrictions at all. If this appears to be the issue, having ensured all valves are fully open the indicator should lift easily and overcome the safety interlocks. Heat should then be provided by the shower`s internal element and the shower can be used accordingly. Step four: If the mechanical indicator doesn`t rise, then this would suggest the shower has been fitted on a gravity system or it could be joined to a combination heat system. If the shower head is producing nothing but hot water, even on the cold setting, this clearly indicates this is the case. The easiest way to check is to feel the incoming connection pipe. If that`s hot, then you`re supplying the shower with hot water, which needs further investigation. Q. How do I replace a flow valve on a mixer shower? If you have a mixer valve that won`t shut off and is causing a drip or a little run of water from the shower head, then the following steps will help. Each of these stages is based on a Dene Cool Touch, so the flow valve in question is on the right-hand side. However, on the majority of mixer showers you will find the on/off flow valve positioned on the left-hand side. To carry out this task, you will need a Posidriv two screwdriver, an adjustable spanner and a craft knife. Step one: Turn the water supply off to the mixer valve. Then use the craft knife to remove the cap off the end of the flow handle – there is a slot designed to assist with this. Step two: Use the screwdriver to remove the handle to access the flow valve. Certain models may have a screw on the underside of the bar that will need releasing first. Unscrew the valve using the spanner, being aware that it has a quarter turn ceramic disc. This means it`s off when there are no gaps and it fully opens if you continue another quarter turn. Step three: Insert the new flow valve by winding it in and then using the spanner to secure it. Make sure the valve is in the off position and then place the handle back on, screwing this back in place. Step four: Turn on the water supply and test it`s working with no leaks or flow issues. To double check this, remove the hose from the mixer and place a thumb or finger over the mixer seal for a few seconds. If no water has collected and no pressure has mounted to push your thumb away then the shower is functional and you can re-attach the hose. If this isn`t the case then this requires more attention.

NOW`S THE TIME TO HIRE A NEW APPRENTICE SAYS JTL
Training provider JTL is encouraging employers to hire new apprentices and take advantage of the latest government funding initiative. The Chancellor`s summer statement provided further detail on the government`s Plan for Jobs to tackle unemployment post Covid-19 and the statement included funding incentives and schemes aimed at helping young people. JTL believes that the funding now accessible to employers will have a hugely positive impact on businesses being able to make the most of the resources and skilled labour available to them, and in turn further support the country`s economic recovery. Data from the Department of Education reveals that employer vacancies for apprentices in April and May this year were 2020 and 1850, which compares to 10,400 and 12,580 in the same months of 2019, respectively. With this in mind, and taking into account that the industry was already facing a skills shortage, JTL wants to encourage and support employers to access the funding now available to them and to take on the next generation of skilled tradespeople. Caroline Turner, Director of Policy & External Relations at JTL, comments: [Data reveals that there has been a significant 85% drop in apprenticeship vacancies. Although this is an exceptionally dismal statistic, it is reassuring that the government is now willing to support apprenticeships and invest sizably to encourage employers to take on more apprentices. CALL FOR UPDATE TO WATER REGULATIONS TRAINING
A new study from the Water Regulatory Advisory Scheme (WRAS) has found that 91% of approved plumbers believe it should be mandatory for plumbers to undertake water fittings regulations training. The research also showed that plumbers want their industry training to be updated to cover off broader spectrum of topics and include periodic refresher training and auditing. In terms of water fitting regulations, 60% of plumbers agree that more in-depth training on the regulations is needed on their courses. The study also found that 55% of plumbers agree that periodic refresher training would ensure plumbers apply the water fittings regulations correctly. Although plumbers have called for some updates to current training, almost four out of five (77%) believe that the current water fitting regulations programme encourages good practise and gives plumbers the knowledge to apply the regulations correctly. Support for continual professional development resources to be readily available was supported by half of the approved plumbers surveyed. Online resources, videos and quizzes were highlighted as examples of useful tools that could be used by skilled plumbers to ensure continued compliance with water regulations. In response to this, WRAS has launched a new online quiz for plumbers. The short questionnaire will test knowledge on the water fittings regulations and is the first in a series of themed quizzes. Only 40% of plumbers agreed that more auditing of plumbers` work would ensure plumbers apply the water fittings regulations correctly, further indicating how important the water fittings regulation training is. Julie Spinks, MD of WRAS, says: [We regularly reach out to our network of approved plumbers to get an update on the industry and it has been very interesting to hear their take on the current industry training. [It is encouraging that most believe the current water fittings regulations courses do ensure regulations can be applied correctly and these insights are really important for the ongoing development of industry training. NO MESSING ABOUT WITH NEW FLUESNUG
The team behind PipeSnug – an innovative product designed to provide a smart and quick-to-apply finish around pipework – has launched a larger `FlueSnug` version designed to fit all 100mm boiler flues. Removing any need for pointing, FlueSnug can be installed in a matter of seconds and snuggly fits the 152mm core-drilled hole through which the boiler pipe and flue exits. It can be used both inside and outside the property and also acts as a barrier to drafts, damp, insects, and pests. FlueSnug also allows installers to quickly access the flue for any service or maintenance requirements, without the need to remove existing brickwork, mortar or sealant. HOW A SHOWER MANUFACTURER ANSWERED THE CALL FOR VENTILATORS
Mira Showers has revealed how, in the critical months of the coronavirus outbreak, it refocused some of its resources and expertise to support the NHS in the manufacture and assembly of critical care ventilators. A video at the end of this post shows how Mira has changed and adapted to the demands of the times. Craig Baker, MD of Mira Showers, says: [When we were approached to become a partner on one of the government-appointed ventilator projects we didn`t hesitate to accept, we knew that we had the expertise and the manufacturing and assembly capability, as well as the passion and skillset in our associates, to deliver what was required." Alongside various other manufacturers who responded to the government`s request for support, Mira Showers was amongst only a few who were able to meet the stringent requirements for testing and assembly required. Jon Ramsdale, manufacturing director and project sponsor explains: [The actual assembly and testing of the ventilator is hugely complex which is part of the reason we were selected as a partner for the project. Whilst manufacturing ventilators is new grounds for us, there are lots of similarities to the complexities involved with assembling digital and electric showers and some of the equipment we are using is identical to that which we use day to day." In just 12 weeks, the manufacturer produced a `factory in a factory` – an all-clean room environment of 2500 sq ft – providing assembly and testing facilities for the advanced development and manufacturing of the ventilators, as well as creating and training a dedicated team to assemble them. Jon Ramsdale adds: [I could not be prouder of the team – they have shown such passion, focus and attention to detail throughout the project, they have dedicated many long hours and weekends and have all been fundamental to its success." Craig Baker adds: [Mercifully the ventilators are no longer needed but we know that we have the strength in our manufacturing capability as well as the flexibility and skill of our associates to react and quickly respond to whatever challenge is thrown at us. Should the government require the ventilators, which we hope is never the case, we will be able to meet those requirements." This latest effort follows shortly after the company designed its own prototype for high-quality face shields, producing 13,000 units across both its Hull and Gloucestershire manufacturing sites in just two weeks. These face shields were distributed to NHS Gloucestershire, its nominated charity of the year, palliative care and bereavement charity, Sue Ryder, as well as the Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust who cover Hull and East Yorkshire NHS.

TRAINING STRATEGY TO BUILD INSTALLER BASE
The Heat Pump Association (HPA) has launched a Training Strategy that lays out how the heating industry needs to transform to enable the wider adoption of heat pumps throughout UK building stock. The association says upskilling of heating installers provides the potential for long-term job growth at the same time as helping to achieve net zero emissions – something that could form an important part of a `green recovery`. The Strategy (see infographic below) contains five steps for how a plumbing and heating engineer can be trained to meet the new challenges we face in trying to achieve the UK goal of a zero carbon future, reducing administration cost, and recommending to government that they support a training voucher scheme for the first 5000 installers to go through the new course. The Strategy comes at the same time two industry-wide consultations are published on qualification criteria for training courses. Both consultations have a deadline of 17:00, 29 June 2020. Graham Wright, Chairman of the HPA, comments: [The Committee on Climate Change has made clear that we need to move to heat pumps taking over from gas boilers as the default replacement heating system within the next 10-15 years. This is ambitious, but entirely achievable if we move now to retrain and up-skill a market that already exists of around 120,000 existing heating engineers. The role of installers cannot be underestimated in decarbonising heat. The Strategy we are launching today, together with the consultations on qualification criteria released earlier this week, are key steps towards achieving this and provide the potential for green jobs as we look to recover from the current crisis."

Choosing the Proper Bathroom Faucet Sink Faucet (Lavatory) Faucets come in a variety of styles and finishes to coordinate with your bathroom sink. It is best to choose your sink first since the sink will often determine the style & size of the faucet needed. • Widespread - 8" Faucet The most popular sink faucet, the 8" widespread requires the center of the outermost holes to be 8" apart. Some widespreads are variable; they can be custom spaced within limits (6" - 12"). The faucet's technical sheet will give all the important measurements. This style is perfect for drop in & undermount sinks, plus pedestal & wall mount sinks that are pre-drilled for this size. From ultra modern to old word traditional, you can find a large range of styles and finishes to fit your bathroom. • Single Hole Faucets Most single hole faucets also have a single control. Lift the handle to start the water flow, turn the handle left or right to control the water temperature. A few have two handles, one for hot water and the other for cold. Spout height & reach varies greatly, making checking the technical sheet more important. We have divided our single hole faucets into two categories: Single Hole: 1 3/8" to 6" spout height Vessel: 7" + spout height (see vessel below) Spout height is the measurement from the counter top to the spout's opening. Spout reach measurement varies between the manufactures. Traditionally it is center to center: center of the faucet base to center of the water stream. Some measure from the front of the faucet to the water stream. Please check the technical information to see how it is measured. There are no hard fast rules on picking the best size. You will want enough room to get your hands comfortably between the bottom of the sink and the spout. The shorter faucets work best with a drop-in or undermount sink of standard depth. Also perfect for a sink with a tap platform. If the sink is shallow, you will want to increase the spout height. • Vessel Faucet These faucets are specially designed for use with above counter vessel sinks. They are designed to be taller to reach over the rim of the sink. Use single hole faucet information above for faucet measurements. Spout reach becomes more important with vessel sinks. They tend to vary more with the slope of the sink. The more slope, the more you want the water stream to be closer to the drain to prevent splashing. • Wall Mount Faucet Wall Mount Faucets are perfect when there is limited counter space around the bathroom sink. They are also popular when paired with vessel sinks when a longer spout is necessary. Spout length on a wall mount faucet is measured from the wall to the center of the water stream. Faucet height is determined by you. As with all faucets, you will want enough room to get your hands comfortably between the bottom of the sink and the spout. These faucets are for use with a sink. Wall mounted tub faucets require a larger valve to fill the tub faster. See wall mount tub faucets. • 4" Centerset Faucet Handles and spout are combined on an integral 6" base. These require the center of the handle holes to be exactly 4" apart. The 4" Centerset is recommended for small sinks and pedestal sinks that are pre-drilled for this size. • Mini Widespread Faucets Looks of a widespread but designed to fit in the same hole requirements as a 4" Centerset. The handles and spout are smaller than the 8" counterpart. Some Mini Widespreads are variable, they can be custom spaced from 4" to 8". • Sink Drains Many sink faucets come with a drain. Most styles will have a lift-rod pop-up drain. Pull the knob, usually behind the spout to open the drain, push down to close. Some modern faucets may have a push drain, or the option of one. The drain is opened and closed by pushing on the drain cover at the bottom of the sink. Wall and vessel sink faucets most likely will not have a drain included. The style of sink defines the drain needed. The sink may be designed with an overflow: a hole in the side of the sink so if water was left running, the water will flow down the inside of the sink and out the drain. If they don't have one, then codes state that the drain used with the sink needs to always be open. That way there is no chance of overflowing the sink. The grid drain pictured below always lets water through. Tub Faucet There are 4 main categories of tub fillers depending on where the faucet is placed: • Roman: on the tub rim or the surrounding tub deck • Freestanding: on the floor • Wall mount: on the wall • Claw-foot: on the tub wall Choose your tub first, then you will know the style of filler you can use. No matter the style used, an important measurement is the spout reach. Make sure the length of the spout is sufficient enough to clear the rim of the tub but not too long to be in the way of a bather. If the faucet is going to be on the tub surround or on the floor, spout height is also important. The spout should comfortably clear the rim of the tub. Also take a look at the flow rate; if a faucet fills at 6 gpm (gallons per minute) and your bath holds 120 gallons - expect 20 minutes of fill time. Change it to 15 gpm and the fill time is cut to 8 minutes.

RESEARCH SHOWS RISING SALES FOR INTERNET PLUMBING RETAILERS
The internet is the fastest growing channel of the overall UK plumbing and heating products market and has experienced strong growth levels over the last decade of above 35% over the last three years, according to the latest report from AMA Research. Despite the uncertain economic climate, exacerbated by Brexit in the last three to four years, the UK internet plumbing and heating market has continued to grow. With lower prices and added convenience, internet retailers have been able to capitalise on changing consumer cross-channel shopping habits with a notable shift towards online purchases. The number of specialist internet plumbing suppliers has continued to consolidate as this market matures, with the leading players taking greater market share. Specialist suppliers account for the largest proportion of plumbing & heating products sold online, some of which still offer a showroom for potential and current customers to view products first-hand, thus enabling them to compete with standard retailers. However; two thirds of these specialist suppliers are pure-play retailers with no showroom area, this is most commonly used to assist them in keeping costs down. Shower controls and taps account for the largest proportion of sales in value terms. Bathroom furniture and accessories are the next popular product categories. The products following on in succession are baths and sanitaryware, heating products such as boilers and standard radiators, shower enclosures, screens, trays and wetroom products, towel warmers, and decorative radiators. Online plumbing specialists continue to expand the number of plumbing brands they supply, in addition to their own-brand products, which is helping them offer competitive pricing throughout. Michelle Turner, editor of the Internet Plumbing Market Report, comments: [Reaping the benefits of COVID-19 is not something many markets are able to do but the internet plumbing market is one of the few. Thanks to the enforced push towards online purchasing as a result of lockdown procedures and the increased DIY activity seen amongst consumers as a result, internet plumbing will experience good growth in 2020 and further into the forecast period."
